  3. Heat a black steel skillet over medium-high heat for 2 minutes.
  4. Add ground beef and diced yellow onion to the hot black steel skillet.
  5. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, breaking beef into crumbles with a wooden spoon, until browned and onions are soft.
  6. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 60 seconds until fragrant.
  7. Add taco seasoning blend and tomato paste, stirring for 1 minute to coat beef.
  8. Pour in beef broth, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 3 minutes until liquid thickens into a glaze coating the beef.
  9. Bake taco shells in the oven for 4 to 5 minutes until warm and crisp.
  10. Turn off skillet heat and stir in a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
  11. Arrange small cream stoneware bowls with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, salsa, avocado, cilantro, and lime wedges for the toppings bar.
  12. Remove warm shells from oven and spoon 2 to 3 tablespoons of seasoned beef into each shell.
  13. Customize tacos with cold toppings from the bar and serve hot and crunchy.

Process Visuals

Step 1 - Chopping Ingredients and Spice Blending: A 45-degree angle medium shot in a bright kitchen lit by soft natural window light from the left. On a light quartz countertop, a warm oak cutting board holds diced onions, minced garlic, and a small cream stoneware dish with red-brown taco seasoning. A black steel skillet rests on the stove alongside an oatmeal linen towel, with white shaker cabinets and brass accents blurred behind. Hero pan: black steel skillet.

Step 2 - Browning Beef in Black Steel Skillet: A medium shot of ground beef and diced onions browning in the dark black steel skillet. A wooden spoon breaks beef into fine crumbles as meat turns brown. Soft window light from the left illuminates the metallic skillet rim over the quartz countertop.

Step 3 - Simmering Seasoned Beef Glaze: A close-up 45-degree shot inside the black steel skillet, showing ground beef coated in dark red spice glaze simmering with broth and tomato paste. Tiny bubbles break across the beef, sending fragrant steam into soft left window light across the light quartz surface.

Step 4 - Warming Corn Taco Shells: An overhead flat-lay shot of 12 golden corn taco shells standing upright on a sheet pan out of the oven. Natural window light highlights toasted corn texture on an oatmeal linen towel over a light quartz countertop with fresh herb garnish.

Step 5 - Assembling the Toppings Bar: A medium flat-lay shot of small cream stoneware bowls arranged on a light quartz countertop filled with taco toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, diced avocado, salsa, cilantro, and lime wedges under bright natural light.

Step 6 - Filling and Plating Tacos: A close-up 45-degree shot showing a wooden spoon filling a crisp corn taco shell with seasoned beef from the black steel skillet. Three tacos sit on a cream stoneware platter topped with lettuce and cheese under soft window light from the left.

Chef's Tips

  1. Use 90/10 Beef with Broth & Paste: Using lean beef avoids greasy runoff. Tomato paste and beef broth create a glossy glaze that binds seasonings to the meat so shells stay crisp.
  2. Bake Taco Shells First: Heating hard corn shells at 350°F for 4 to 5 minutes warms corn oils, making them fragrant and crisp rather than brittle.
  3. Make-Ahead Meat: Seasoned ground beef can be cooked up to 4 days in advance. Reheat in a skillet with a splash of broth before assembling tacos.
